Thanks Tourmaline.
Destination Moon and Rocketship XM were the 2 movies that launched my interest in space. I have watched DM and RXM probably 20 times each if not more.
I am going to post these screen grabs and then comment on each of them.
George Pal probably worked with some government agency for technical advice although the chief illustrator was Chesley Bonestell who made these paintings.
I haven't traced where the idea of a black daytime sky came from initially but you can see that, as NAZA was formed until 1958, you can see the bright stars from the surface of the moon.
In the photo below you can see sky phenomenon from stars to a galaxy which is slightly to the right.
Chesley Bonestell illustrated the book, "Conquest of Space" which has always been my space bible. I remember how thrilling his paintings of Mars were with the green fields.

This view is not possible from earth. This illustraton (if it is an illustration) shows too much of the western or left side of the moon.
The circular area, lower left, is Gassendi which can be barely viewed from earth.

I cannot match this illustration below (or the 2 under it) with any photo I have of the moon. So it might be possible that close-ups were not authorized.
